Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park Day Trip - With Snorkeling & Dolphin Spotting

The dolphins

Bottlenose and humpback dolphins live in these waters year round, and the channel between Shimoni and Wasini is where they hunt. Most mornings you will see them, often close enough to the boat to hear them breathe. They are wild animals and we cannot promise them — but they are the reason this place is called Kasa Pomboo.

The snorkelling

Kisite-Mpunguti has been protected since 1978, and it shows. The coral is alive and intact in a way that is increasingly rare, and the fish have never been hunted, so they do not flee from you — parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, moray eels, and the occasional green turtle grazing the seagrass.

Visibility here is among the best on the Kenyan coast, and the reef sits shallow enough that you see everything from the surface. No experience needed. Masks, snorkels and fins are on board, and our crew stay in the water with anyone who would like company.

Lunch is the other half of the day

Most Kisite boats drop their guests on Wasini. Ours comes back to our own jetty, and you eat with us on the terrace above the channel.

To start — dried coconut and mabuyu, the sweetened baobab seed from the trees around the property.

Then whole crab, served in the shell with the tools to get into it. It is messy, it takes a while, and it is the part most people remember. With rice, and chapati that keeps coming.

Not a crab eater? Fish landed that morning, chicken, or a vegetarian dish instead — just tell us when you book.

To finish — fruit salad and kahawa tungu, the strong spiced Swahili coffee of this coast.

The day

We clear you through the Kenya Wildlife Service post at 7:30, the boat leaves at 8:00, and you are back at our jetty by 1:00 for lunch.

Good to know

Departs 8:00, returns 1:00. Please book by 6pm the evening before. Weather and tide dependent; where a trip cannot run safely we will offer another date or refund it in full. Park entry is set by the Kenya Wildlife Service and varies by nationality and age — please choose your category. East African citizens and Kenya residents pay the same rate. Tell us of any dietary requirements when you book.
