The crocodiles
Where the Ramisi river meets the sea the mangroves thicken and the water turns brackish — and this is where the crocodiles live. We take the boat slowly through the channels while the crew point them out, sunning on the banks or sliding into the water as you pass. Seeing one from a boat is a very different thing from seeing one in a photograph.
The same channels hold kingfishers, herons and fish eagles, and the mangrove forest itself is worth the trip.
The sandbank
Then out to the sandbank. As the tide drops, a strip of white sand surfaces in the middle of open water — no trees, no buildings, nothing but sand and sea in every direction. Swim off it, walk its length, and be back on the boat before the sea takes it again.
