What the Caves Hold
The Shimoni Slave Caves are a network of limestone caverns beneath the village, used during the 18th and 19th centuries as holding pens for enslaved people awaiting transportation across the Indian Ocean to Oman, Persia, and beyond.
The caves stretch for several kilometres. Chains and iron rings are still visible. It is a deeply affecting place — the kind of history that deserves direct encounter rather than a footnote.
Today the caves are managed by the local community. Guided tours are conducted by Shimoni residents, whose own family histories are tied to this site. Kasa Pomboo can arrange guided visits.
Visiting the Caves
The caves are a 5-minute walk from Kasa Pomboo, through Shimoni village. Tours take approximately 45 minutes and are conducted in English and Swahili. Entry fees support the local community trust. We recommend visiting in the morning when it is cooler.

The caves are a 5-minute walk from the hotel. We can provide a local guide — ask at reception on arrival.
What to Expect
Limestone caverns, some passages requiring ducking. Cool temperature inside. A local guide will interpret the history.
Visitor Note
This is a solemn historical site. The guides ask visitors to approach it with respect. Photography is permitted.
